(Excerpt 1, pg 78, chapter, HAGRE)

Two men stood side by side on the crest of a large grassy hill. Overlooking dozens of campfires in the valley below. Hagre, the Chieftain and Warlord of the largest of the clans held the reins of his black Stallion as he spoke to his General. Draklyn was a giant of a man. Standing nearly seven feet in height he towered above his commander.

“I have something I want to show you Draklyn. Have our horses tended and meet me in my tent!” ordered Hagre.

Without hesitation Draklyn took the horses down the grassy slope and found the groomer. He ordered the groomer to feed, water, and brush the animals. Their saddles and tack were to be cleaned and polished by morning. After that the horses were to be tied to the picket line that ran between his and Hagre’s tents. The man leapt from his seat and took the horses straight away. Draklyn made his way back up the hill and opened the flap to Hagre’s tent.

Hagre released his grip pointing with his head, “Shhh … look … over there! Soldiers, lots of Soldiers!”
Draklyn nodded and sheathed his knife, “I see, I’ll wake the others!”
Hagre gripped him again, “Quietly … very quietly!”
Draklyn and Hagre crawled through the tall grass. They began to rouse the others. Each man would wake another after he was awakened. The Soldiers were fifty to seventy five yards away. Someone, it will never be known exactly who screamed as he was awakened. He had tried to fight off what he perceived as an attack. The Soldiers were dismounted and filling their canteens in the creek. The scream alerted them to the location of the Barbarians in the grass!

The Soldiers instantly leapt into the saddle and prepared to engage the enemy! As the Soldiers charged Hagre and Draklyn leapt to their saddles. They grabbed the horn of the saddle and slung themselves up. They circled once screaming and yelling, the last of the Warriors woke to the ringing of metal against metal. It seemed to ring louder in the chill morning air. Leaping into the saddle as they cleared their heads. The fight was on!

The odds were on the side of the Soldiers. Fifty Soldiers were in a fight to the death with thirty Barbarians. And the Barbarians had been roused from their sleep at the onset.

Screams of anguish and the ringing of swords broke the morning silence.  Draklyn was struck in the lower left calf by an arrow from a Soldiers crossbow! He was engaged with several Soldiers at the time. He winced and dropped to one knee. A Soldier struck Draklyn from behind. Driving his dagger to the hilt in his back. He reached over his shoulder and pulled the dagger out!  He dropped his giant war axe and pulled the man over his back and held him by the hair.

(Excerpt 3, pg 281, chapter, Dragon riders)

Tameje Demall faced Klinae, “This is none other than Kourish …

She cut his words short, “Tawn I believe! This magnificent Dragon can only be Kourish Tawn. He has already done the honors of introducing himself. He says he is the oldest and the grandest of the living Dragons.”

Zooran briskly climbed into the saddle on Kourish Tawn’s back. The other’s followed suit with their respective Dragons and they were off. The three Dragons headed back the way they had come. Zooran wanted to see these Barbarians first hand. If they had decided to find the Wizards Lair he would be more than happy to give them a little taste of what they were in for!

Trees passed by so quickly Klinae couldn’t even tell what kind they were. But that made no never mind to her. She was delighted to be flying again. She was thrilled and amazed at the agility of the massive creatures as they flew inches away from disaster with no effort. She thought how incredible it must be from the ground to watch three Dragons flying so closely together through the canyons of rocks and huge trees in such tight formation. She wondered, but could only guess at the speed at which they were flying. She would guess it to be about ten times faster than the fastest horse.
